Phinsys co-founder and CTO, Charles has over 15 years’ experience in developing advanced SQL, BI, and data warehouse applications for the financial services and insurance industries.

Charles graduated with a First in Mathematics and Computer Science from Leeds University, later gaining a Masters in Mathematical Logic and the Theory of Computation from the University of Manchester.

His early career saw him first working at Room Solutions before moving into investment banking with development roles at UBS and Credit Suisse. In 2008 he returned to Room Solutions, designing and implementing an entire data warehouse for a major London Market insurer, leading multiple projects to enhance existing Lloyd’s syndicate data warehouses and establishing a close working relationship with Richard Tyler.

Charles loves the challenge of translating a business problem into a software solution and at Phinsys continues to design and develop solutions that extend the existing suite of Phinsys products. Charles’ ability to converse and work with members of the clients’ Finance and Actuarial teams ensures that the solutions his team develops meet the business requirements, at the same time developing them with technical innovation at the forefront.




Co-founder and CEO of Phinsys, Richard’s career has embraced financial accounting and high-level IT development within the global insurance industry.

Starting in 1996 as a treasury assistant at Chubb Insurance, Richard progressed rapidly – by 2002 he was Chubb’s European Accounting Manager, implementing PeopleSoft and centralized finance processes across Europe. Moving to Ace European Group, he streamlined and re-engineered the firm’s London Market financial reporting process, both for the Syndicate and Company Markets. His problem-solving approach took him towards the consultancy arena, and in 2006 he joined Room Solutions as Head of Business Solutions.

It was inevitable that Richard would develop a consultancy and software business, and in 2010 he and Charles Penwill set up Phinsys. Phinsys began by working with a number of Lloyd’s and London Market companies to help enhance their financial systems processes, resulting in the development of products and solutions for the whole market.

Richard’s combination of business knowledge around Financial Accounting and Processes, allied to his technical knowledge around solutions and architecture, provides a unique skill-set for leading a team designing and developing software that solves seemingly difficult problems in a straightforward manner.




Stuart has 19 years’ insurance market experience, with over 12 years ‘at the sharp end’, dealing directly with clients in account management, pre-sales and business development roles, most recently as the Head of UK and Ireland Sales at Accenture Software, following their acquisition of leading software provider Duck Creek Technologies. Stuart’s previous roles have exposed him to IT solutions covering the entire insurance lifecycle of both commercial and personal lines markets including policy administration, claims handling, pricing and rating and BI.

Stuart started his career as an analyst at Room Solutions, progressing to become part of the sales and account management team. Relishing the customer-facing role, it was natural that Stuart should move into a consultative sales position, where he worked closely with many of the major names in the Lloyd’s and London markets as well as many of the large UK general insurers during his time at Duck Creek and Accenture.

As the COO for Phinsys, Stuart’s role is to develop the UK business and look after existing clients and active projects. It is a role that also combines business development and account management, ensuring that our projects are an accurate and effective response to customer needs.


In common with most of our industry, Phinsys deploys teams of expert consultants to deliver our products and programmes. The advantage of this is that we are able to build teams specifically aligned to each project, ensuring that the best skills available are in the right place at the right time.

Our consultants are selected for their knowledge and experience of the insurance market, and in particular their skills with the financial systems that the market depends on. In addition to technical expertise, we recruit only consultants who also have an appreciation of the client’s perspective and in–depth business analysis skills.

The combination of a deep understanding of client needs with technical expertise in Microsoft applications enables Phinsys and its consultants to create unique solutions, and to complement and improve upon existing systems. The overall result is a far more user-friendly front-end experience, giving finance teams hands-on control, and significantly enhanced data output.
